Dharan, July 10
Police arrested more than 20 earthquake victims who were staging a relay hunger strike demanding to waive the loans at the branch offices of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) and Rastriya Banijya Bank (RBB) in Dharan this afternoon. Chairperson of the Earthquake Victims Struggle Committee Poshraj Niraula said police intervened in a peaceful protest while they were staging a sit-in at the Inland Revenue office. The police also arrested those persons who tried to disrupt traffic protesting the arrest of the agitators, he added. The winners of the first Nepal Star talent hunt, were honored amidst an event held at the premises of Nepal Tourism Board Office, Exhibition Road today. Bishnu Chemjong, the winner from Dharan, bagged Rs 240,000 as cash prize along with a music assignment worth Rs 260,000. First runner-up Nisha Atal was awarded Rs 50,000 as cash prize along with Rs 250,000 worth of assignment. Similarly, the third runner-up Almoda was honored with an assignment worth Rs 50,000.

An Indian Film Shows Amid Fears Of Violence
India's culture czars are showing a lack of foresight over Nepal, holding a film festival at a time when everyone fears an escalation of violence. The Indian embassy, along with the BP Koirala India-Nepal Foundation, is organising an Indian Film Festival in six Nepali cities. It is to be held in the first three months of 2006. |
