Food Technology is one of the most integral parts of food production all over the world and now Dharan’s Central Food Technology Campus’s Food Technology makes it possible for Nepali students to specialise in this area.
The academic hierarchy to becoming a Food Technician begins with SLC, two years of IA, and finally four years of B.Tech, offered by Central Food Tech. The college also maintains a record that all of the 400 graduates of B.Tech and B.Sc. [Microbiology] since their establishment in 1993 are employed full time, mostly in posts such as Production Manager, Manager, Quality Control Manager and Food Inspectors in various industries from noodle, sugar, oil and beer companies to His Majesty’s Governments Food Research Institute, Food Department and The Milk Development Corporation. For the past three years the campus has also been running an M.Tech program for students who want to complete their Masters in the same field.
More than two-dozen students who have finished their B.Tech are now on their way to study PhD and Masters through various universities in Australia, Japan, England, America and even India. Sub-lecturer Dilip Subba and lecturer Ganga Kharel who completed their PhD from Germany and Japan respectively, are two examples.
The need for food inspection and quality control is high, which is why the Nepal Food Technology department has put forth a request with the government to open Food Technology Departments and install Food Technicians in all 75 districts and 58 municipalities of Nepal. Till date these departments have only been opened in Biratnagar, Hetauda, Mechi, Butwal, Bhairaba and Bharatpur municipalities and all the food technicians working here are from Dharan.
